Magda's Doppelganger

Image from here. I had a picture of Magda here for ages, but I kept getting people visiting this post for the image so I have changed it so that it won't be my most popular post forever more even though I don't think many people have really ever read it and it is by far not my best work!

Do you remember Magda from There's something about Mary?

I swear I saw her at the beach at the weekend!

This woman was literally brown all over.

Her skin looked like a crinkle-cut chip.

She was sunning herself, and burning her precious skin.

I said to my friend K, "Geez, how old do you reckon she actually is?" (thinking to myself that her skin looks at least 80 but surely, surely an 80 year old woman wouldn't be out sun-baking would she?)

K said, "Probably 40".

With the weather warming up, Magda's Doppelganger is a timely reminder of the importance of sunscreen, moderate sun exposure and a good sense of humour at the beach.

Love the word Doppelganger! I was talking about this the other day with a friend but couldn't remember what the official term was. I will have to email her ow and let her know it was Doppelganger.

I was a sun-worshiper in my teens, but my now-husband challenged me on my habits when we started dating. So for the past 15 years, I've been proud to be lily-white. I just hope those first 19 years of my life don't haunt me too much in my aging! :)

Ha! I adore those over-roasted, over-blonde, over-saggy bikini lovers. The world needs more of them so I can sit under my brolly with my 30+ on and just admire their sheer awfulness. x

I LOVE Magda, she was the best character in the whole movie!

My SIL is a serial sunbaker - Very lovely olive skin that is yet to start showing the effects of the sun but I hate to think about the extent of the effects for her in 10 years time ...

I was a tanner in my youth - baby oiled up and sunbaking on the tin roof of the garage - eek! Thankfully I gave it up and my skin's yet to show any real effects - but boy do I shudder when I see the Magda's at the beach.

All I can think of is the tongue kiss with the dog.

I am a lover of a tan. But never THAT much of a fan...

Poor Magda. Had my day in the sun at uni. Sitting round the pool. (What? Did you think we were there to learn or something?) Now I'm a lily-white sun teetotaller. 30+ is barely enough cover. No fake tan. It just ends up all over any pale clothes or furnishing. And it smells funny.

You know my most popular post HAS to be because of the pictures or...something. It never gets any comments but still hundreds of hits a week even though it isn't at all my best work, like you said.

I actually really liked this post though. It IS a heafty reminder. Sure you're not going to suddenly look very aged the next day, or pobably the next summer, but one day you will find yourself looking a couple of years older, and then add a couple more the next year, and the next, and suddenly you're looking double your age.
I don't tan. Ok so I minimally tan. My legs? Nope. Nor my belly, just my sholders and arms (which are exposed the most all year round to be honest. I never used to use sunscreen but I now do. At the very least on my face EVERY morning.
No point in wasting my money on botox when I can just put a little sunscreen on now.
I never understood sunbaking. Isn't it, well, boring? I could rarely last half an hour *yawn*

If ever anyone gave sunbaking a bad name it was she! They should use her in an ad campaign :)
